READING XR

A Tool In the Fight to Improve Literacy

READING XR is a tool for evaluating reading fluency, using eye movements to identify the underlying factors causing reading difficulties.

"25% of children have a significant vision problem that impacts their learning."
-American Optometric Association

How does READING XR help identify vision problems?

By tracking eye movements during a reading comprehension test.

These movements are natural when reading a passage of text. However, eye movements that indicate distraction (movements up and down) and long periods of fixation on certain words can point out why readers have trouble with comprehension. Data is collected from eye movements to evaluate reading performance based on standardized norms for grade levels.

Why you should use READING XR

Using eye tracking tools to better understand factors affecting reading comprehension has been in practice for over 30 years.

The tool Visagraph, created by Stanford Taylor, entered the market in 1985. Visagraph is no longer being manufactured. READING XR was built on the concepts of Visagraph testing, but the READING XR software runs on the Microsoft HoloLens 2, state of the art technology which is widely available in the marketplace.

Benefits of READING XR

For Kids

Tackling reading problems is a tough job for anyone, especially kids. READING XR uses the concept of gamification to combine the functional ability of tracking and assessing eye movements, while kids enjoy using the gaming aspect of an Augmented or Virtual Reality headset. Kids actually WANT to try READING XR and see what it's all about!

For Specialists

Eye Tracking tools play an essential role in evaluating factors affecting reading fluency and comprehension. READING XR is a comprehension test which can be administered within 10 minutes. The results provide informative graphical data charting a subject’s reading skills in comparison to standardized grade level averages. Used as a tool for early intervention, rapid assessment testing used at scale aids specialists in meeting state testing mandates.

For Parents and Caregivers

Parents can view video replays of their children’s eye movements as they read a passage. Experience the assessment results by seeing how each word was read. No more guessing about where the problem lies, the data is readily available in formats which are easy for everyone to understand.

"We are excited about the READING XR Hololens System, which represents a seamless interface between Augmented Reality and clinical ophthalmic diagnosis. It presents a compelling visual stimulus and audio feedback that patients respond to easily, and the 3D eye movement tracking technology provides robust and reliable data. More than just a competent replacement for older eye movement tracking systems; READING XR is a solid, next-generation platform with tremendous potential for a vast number of future clinical and research applications in the eye care industry."

- Larry Baitch, OD, PhD, FAAO Professor, Associate Dean for Research School of Optometry Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

“READING XR is an excellent, economical mixed-reality eye-tracking device that can markedly aid in understanding the factors that affect reading comprehension. Its online hosting simplifies data capture management, simulation replay, and scheduling, making it a dynamic and capable replacement for traditional reading analysis systems such as the Visagraph III.”

- Dr. Gary Mills Reading Strategies Course Lead, United States Air Force Academy, Colorado

“While augmented reality technology is still largely in its infancy, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy is encouraged by the strong potential this technology shows in educational settings. The READING XR developed by SphereGen is reflective of a team and company that is clearly committed to drawing on appropriate literacy and learning expertise as well as technical expertise as appropriate to their product. Their product is built on a foundation of evidence from research on eye movements and reading and informed by experts with prior experience developing and improving products for this very sort of use in learning and clinical contexts. In addition to a strong team and a strong process, the product itself – the READING XR – is the rare technology that appears to deliver on its promise.”

READING XR PROCESS

How Does It Work?

1

Clinician uses READING XR application to log subject related information and set appropriate reading passage.

2

Subject wears AR/VR headset and begins application with voice commands.

3

READING XR application records data and sends it to the cloud.

4

Clinician is able to retrieve data and display it for evaluation.
